The Ursula Zindel Hilti Foundation finances the Family Strengthening Programme in the municipalities of Karjanha, Lahan and Ganeshman Charnath in the Siraha district. The aim is to enable children to grow up in a nurturing environment and to reach their full potential.
The Siraha district is located in the Nepalese lowlands. Despite the fertile soil, an above-average number of families live in poverty. There are many reasons for this: On the one hand, people lack knowledge about modern farming methods, and on the other, alternative sources of income are rare. Most families have hardly any access to medical services, clean water and sanitary facilities. Discrimination against girls and women and violence in education also have a negative impact on children’s development.
To achieve its goal, SOS Children's Villages collaborates closely with municipal authorities, schools and non-profit organisations and pursues a holistic approach. The families are given access to healthcare, live in a hygienic environment and enjoy a balanced diet. Thanks to appropriate agricultural methods and the creation of micro-enterprises, families can generate a livelihood. SOS Children's Villages is also committed to providing quality schools and promoting non-violent education methods.
2967 children and 3801 adults are supported directly. Indirectly, the improvements achieved benefit around 19'000 persons.
